Remove the plate covering the ram with a screw driver. Now you can follow the below mentioned steps. Solution 1 The RAM is not seated properly! This could be the reason that your laptop is not booting up after upgrading with a new memory module. I faced exactly the same problem initially. Following are a few simple steps to insert the new memory module RAM properly. Once you have removed the old RAM and ready to insert or install the new RAM, then the most important thing you need to know is that the angle at which you insert the new RAM.
The correct method is to insert it at an angle of degrees. Tilt the RAM slowly at an angle of 30 degrees while inserting the RAM and when properly positioned, it will get in easily and instantly. It is after this that you need to press the RAM down firmly so that it’s placed within the retaining clips firmly. Now put back the battery, plug in the power cord and turn on your system. You will now notice the system will boot up successfully without blinking of two lights.
Solution 2 You may be getting the error because your laptop doesn’t support more than 1GB. There is no solution for this. Solution 3 Swapping the RAM from one to another has worked for many. If you have two slots then swap one to another and try rebooting. In order to check this, lets start with RAM. In order to know whether the RAM is at fault or not, try inserting the RAM in the other slot, if it works properly from another slot, then the problem is with the first slot.
Second possibility is that the RAM itself is damaged. Insert the RAM in the other slot and boot up the system, if you still get the same blinking caps lock and lock button error, then probably the ram is damaged.
Apart from the above fixes, there could be other issues as well depending upon the brand and models of various laptops. Asked 5 years, 8 months ago. Active 2 years, 9 months ago. Viewed 75k times. Peter, I have tried switching the slots, in every combination I can think of. The new RAM works in another computer an i5 with a different motherboard. That will confirm that it is Windows specifically that is having the problem, and not a hardware incompatibility.
I have checked at least 5 modules listed in the QVL list. They all were 1. Your new module is 1. What CPU do you have? You should also verify you are using the most current firmware. First, some remarks : According to your motherboard manual, to install four DIMMs, all four need to be identical.
So the most that is recommended with yours is to use the two 4GB sticks, while the 2GB ones are unusable together with the others. For using two DIMMs, they need to be installed in the white slots.
Linux may be cleverer than Windows in forcing the usage of DIMM sticks that do not exactly conform to the specification. You have bought high-quality modern DIMMs for a motherboard dating apparently from They may just be too good for the motherboard. Based on the above, I have the following suggestions : Restore the configuration of RAM to the one that worked, boot Windows 10, start Windows Update and fully patch the computer.
Improve this answer. Thanks for this detailed response. I misread the manual, I thought it was only a requirement to have identical DIMMs in the same coloured slots.
I will proceed with only the two new DIMMs in the white slots. I will also try your other recommendations and see how it goes. I used the Crucial System Scanner as you suggested, and it returned these results. I’m a little skeptical about them recommending their own brand, though, and also in light of your suggestion that my computer might have older specs, and they are recommending more modern RAM. There are some differences between Crucial and the ones you bought, for example 1.
I’m not enough of a technician to tell categorically that the DIMMs you bought are incompatible. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread.
